The sights, smells and flavours of Lorraine are guaranteed to refresh even the weariest of travellers.
The region's three country parks provide great panoramas, ranging from the Vosges Mountains to lakes and vast open stretches of countryside for golfing and cycling.
People come to "take the waters" in renowned spa resorts such as Vittel and Contrexéville, and Lorraine has many places of cultural and historic interest, from Verdun and the military sites of the First World War to its great historic buildings. Metz cathedral has stained glass windows designed by Chagall, and Place Stanislas in Nancy is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Glass making and crystal are ancient traditions here, and Mirecourt has been making violins and cellos for more than 300 years.
Flanked on all side by regions of gastronomic excellence, Lorraine is no exception, with specialities such as tarts, clafoutis, soufflés and gratins.
The sun-drenched hillsides overlooking the River Moselle produce the grapes for red and white wines, and vins gris and beers are also great favourites.
