This is France's largest region, with the result that its charms are many and varied.
The area comprises eight, very different departments and four of the country's mightiest rivers- the Aveyron, Lot, Tarn and Garonne. Among the region's most popular tourist attractions, the capital, Toulouse, is renowned for its aeronautical associations and its famous writer St-Exupéry Albi, as the one-time home of Toulouse- Lautrec, and Lourdes for its shrine and pilgrimages.
Clues to the area's ancient history are everywhere, from the prehistoric cave drawings of Pêche Merle to the medieval bastide towns.
There are numerous festivals and an abundance of local specialities to sample such as foie gras, magret de canard and Armagnac.
