Since prehistoric times, the Rhône valley has provided a natural trade route. Cradled between Burgundy and Provence, the region is at the crossroads of Western Europe.
Today, its accessibility makes it an ideal holiday destination in both summer and winter months. Famous for the largest ski domain in the world, with popular resorts such as Tignes, Chamonix and Val d’Isère, it also offers activities such as hiking, cycling and canoeing.
At the same time the region is also known for its abundant nature reserves and parks.
Lake Leman, Lake Bourget and Lake Annecy are three major attractions. The main cities of culture, Lyon, St-Etienne and Grenoble have fascinating old quarters, many excellent restaurants and a vibrant cultural life. Also of note are regional specialities such as Montélimar nougat, Ardèche chestnuts and the sweet fondue savoyarde, not to mention the world famous Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône wines.
