THE AUVERGNE REGION IN THE HEART OF FRANCE

Home to the largest volcanic region in Europe, the Auvergne possesses an abundance of natural beauty and spectacular landscapes. It is an outdoorsman’s dream, from the gentle, rolling countryside and spa town of Vichy in the Allier in the far north, to the dense forests and the Chaine des Puys with the Puy de Dome (the highest at 1465m) and Massif du Sancy in the centre, the wildernesses of the Cantal with its famous Salers cattle, known for its rich meat and wonderful Auvergne cheeses, to the Haute-Loire in the south with rivers and chateaux and the Natural Regional Park of the Livradois Forest, where one can usually see birds of prey, wildlife and deer in their natural habitat.

The Auvergne has many delightful towns and small beaux villages and is perfect walking country with spacious, diverse and unspoilt landscapes and some of the most striking scenery in France. Other activities include canoe/kayak, cycling, horse riding, fishing, visiting museums, chateaux, Romanesque churches and swimming in the many lakes, or just relaxing with a book and a glass of wine for a peaceful and stress free holiday.

This scenery can be enjoyed at any time of the year. The Auvergne has an excellent climate and low rainfall. Summers are hot, but not burning as further south. Autumns are long and warm with lovely blue skies and sunshine, excellent for walking and photography. Winters are dry, usually with snow over 800M and sunshine. Ideal for cross country ski-ing down the forest tracks, or downhill ski-ing at the ski resorts of Super Besse and Le Lorian.
