Situated on the great trade route between the Mediterranean and northern Europe, the dukedom of Burgundy was once more powerful than the entire kingdom of France. Today, it is better known for its superb wines and gastronomy such as boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, Charollais beef, Bresse chicken and Morvan ham. At the same time, a drive from the north-west, where Chablis is produced, to the Maconnais in the south will take you through some of France's most distinguished vineyards. Burgundy also offers the visitor its rich culture, with colourful festivals, historical pageants and musical events, as well as a landscape dotted with castles, Romanesque churches, cathedrals and cities of culture.
